Hatters will have the opportunity to learn more about the Canadian legal system during Law Day on Saturday at the local courthouse from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to two mock trials running in the morning and afternoon, attendees will be able to go on a tour of the Court of Queen’s Bench, which is celebrating its centennial this year, guided by local lawyer David Carter.
Law Day chair Darren Cahoon says this will allow members of the public to learn “some interesting background on some of the more visible parts of the courthouse, like our historic Courtroom 1, which is the envy of courtrooms throughout the province because of its beautiful design.”
There will also be a citizenship ceremony that morning for 25 new Canadians at 10 a.m. organized by Saamis Immigration, where Mayor Ted Clugston will appear as a guest speaker.
Former Alberta attorney general and Medicine Hat MLA James Horsman will serve as the presiding official.
Although the ceremony is a private affair, the new citizens will have the opportunity to mingle with Law Day attendees afterwards.
Two films produced by the Legal Archive Society of Alberta – “The Agreement” and “The Last Hangman”- are going to be screened.
“The Agreement” is about a lawyer who sacrifices his legal practice to serve in the military during the First World War and “The Last Hangman” concerns the second-largest mass hanging in Canadian history, which occurred in the Hat.
“We’re going to be showing both of those on an alternating basis throughout the day,” said Cahoon.
Various local law enforcement agencies will be tabling in the courthouse to allow attendees to get a glimpse of what they do and ask questions.
